I am using Office 2010.
To insert a table you have in a word document, just go to the Insert ribbon, then find the Object button (in the Text branch) and click on it.
Select "Create from file" then Browse for the file you want to be opened, then click OK and the table will be integrated into Powerpoint. You can resize it to the desired size on your slide. If you double click on it, it becomes editable.
If, instead, you want to open the file in Word, you can either insert a Hyperlink directly from the Insert ribbon, or you can insert any shape, then right click on it and select Hyperlink. The document will be open-able from the Powerpoint show only, not when editing the slides.
If, instead of a shape, you want to have a word document icon, you can add it by going on the Insert ribbon, then finding the Object button (in the Text branch) and clicking on it. Select "Create from file" then Browse for the file you want to be opened, but also select "Display as icon" before clicking OK. If you also check the "Link" option, then you will be able to open the word document when editing the slide.
To sum it up: - to be able to open the file when editing slides: Insert - Object - check "Create from file" - check "Link" - locate file - OK - to be able to open the file during a powerpoint show / presentation: Insert - Shape / Object / etc. - right click on it - Hyperlink - locate file - OK
