While creating a shortcut to the printer on the desktop and double clicking that usually takes you to the print queue, sometimes it takes you to a list of printer options where you can select to view the queue (it depends on the printer drivers).
If you find the latter annoying and want the print queue open directly from shortcut, do the following:

Based on that I was able to make it work on Windows 7:
1. Open Start - Run - Regedit
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers
3. Go into the key with the printer name
4. Go into the DSSpooler key of the selected printer
5. Copy the value (data) of uNCName
6. Right click on desktop and select New -- Shortcut
7. In the field called Type the location of the item add the following line (replace paste uNCName value here with the value from point 5:
C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /o /n "paste uNCName value here"
8. Click the Next button and name your shortcut then click on Finish button
9. To change the icon of your shortcut, you can right click it - properties - change icon,
10. Then type the following link into the "Look for icons in this file" field: C:\Windows\System32\shell32.dll
11. Choose an icon and click OK then OK.
