You can easily add a comment to any cell without actually inserting a comment. It's more of a caption or tool tip.
This is done using Data Validation.
1. Select the cell/cells on which you want the caption added 2. Go to DATA tab and select Data Validation 3. Modify nothing in the Settings tab, just move to the Input Message tab 4. make sure Show input message when cell is selected is checked. 5. Add a Title to your caption and add the message in the Input message field, then click OK
Now each time you select that cell it will show the message. The title will be displayed in bold text while the message will be displayed in regular text.
If you want to remove it, just delete the title and the message text.
Even though I stumbled upon this myself, here's how you can toggle to show/hide comments with VBA:
