I encountered today a word document saying it has 3 pages when actually it had 2 pages. Bottom left corner said Page 1 of 3, once clicking it it showed 2 page thumbnails.

I converted it to PDF and PDF had paces 1/3 and 3/3, no 2/3.

To fix this, I clicked on page 1, went to Page Layout - Page Setup - Layout and mess with Section start (I selected Continuous for page 1).
Then I clicked on page 2, went to Page Layout - Page Setup - Layout and mess with Section start (I selected New Page for page 2).

When I selected Continuous for the whole document, page 2 content had disappeared, so I selected a different option for each of the 2 pages.

NOTE:
This is a by-Section setting.

I encountered a bit different situation where:
- I have 20 pages in a document
- in thumbnail view they are numbered 1-5 then 37-44, then 37-42.
- printing pages 6-10 (for example) obviously doesn't work
- pages are not numbered, numbers appear only in Navigation - PAGES

I have a Section Break (Continuous) on page 5, because page 5 is Portrait and the following page (37) is Landscape.

I inserted page numbers and for pages 1-5 it shows Pag. 1 / 20 etc., then for pages after 5 it shows 37/20 ... 44/20 then again 37/20 ... 42/20.

I went to the first 37/20 page, after page 5/20, right clicked on 37 and chose Format Page Numbers and in the Page Number Format box I notice Page numbering is set to Start at: 37 (of course). I check Continue from previous section then move to my second 37/20 page and do the same.

I had to do that a couple more times as 41 and 42 were individually set to start from 41 and 42. So after doing the above 4 times I fixed the document and could now print any ranges (pages show correctly in Navigation (1-20).

I removed page numbering (it's not necessary to remove and it's useful to leave on, but the original document didn't have them so I removed them too).

Example image:

Fix it with VBA:
