1. USING 2 FILES SIDE BY SIDE

First off open both your documents and set them side by side:
- open both documents
- in one of them on the VIEW TAB click on VIEW SIDE BY SIDE and also on SYNCHRONOUS SCROLLING - this will tile the windows (documents) horizontally and make them scroll at the same time
- also in the VIEW TAB there is a button named ARRANGE ALL - click it and tile your windows (documents) VERTICALLY

NOW YOU CAN CHECK THEM SIDE BY SIDE AND EASILY SPOT DIFFERENCES

2. MERGING TWO FILES TO ONE WORKBOOK

Open both documents and copy the desired worksheet (the one to compare) from one document to the other. Right click on it - Move or Copy - To Book - Move to end - CHECK Create a copy.

Close the document you had only 1 sheet in.

GO TO VIEW TAB AND CLICK ON NEW WINDOW to DUPLICATE THE EXISTING DOCUMENT IN 2 INSTANCES OF EXCEL. Select the older sheet in one window and the newer sheet in the other.

THEN DO LIKE FOR POINT 1 ABOVE WHEN YOU COMPARED 2 DOCUMENTS - set them side by side, vertically.
NOTE 1: you can't use freeze panes when you have the same document open in 2 windows.
NOTE 2: synchronous scrolling might not work well when viewing the sheets like this - you can disable it and go manually.

NOW:

Select all used cells in the newest / modified version of your document and then:
- go to HOME tab - CONDITIONAL FORMATTING - NEW RULE
- select USE A FORMULA TO DETERMINE WHICH CELLS TO FORMAT
- if you would have to compare 2 sheets in the same document, the formula would be:
      =A1<>sheet_name!A1

Click the format button and define how your modifications will look like - for example red fill and bold white font, or thick cell borders etc.
