The problem I had was when working with 2 different sheets and returning to the base sheet (where the formula was) and selecting a cell, it automatically added the sheet's name to the formula - which messes up SUMIF.
Lemme explain with my example - I was working in sheet TG and wrote the following formula with data from sheet 2018: =SUMIFS('2018'!AU$5:AU$102;'2018'!$BD$5:$BD$102;'TG'!$I76)
I didn't need the sheet reference for the last part since it was in my active sheet (where the formula was), but since Excel put it I didn't bother removing it.
Apparently, that is the problem with SUMIF not being sorted correctly (eg largest to smallest). After removing that part, sorting the SUMIF column worked correctly:
=SUMIFS('2018'!AU$5:AU$102;'2018'!$BD$5:$BD$102;$I76)
