I got this error, which is weird because 10 minutes ago I updated the registry by importing some .reg files with no problems. I guess some keys can't be modified - in this case I was trying to add something to My Computer context menu.
I want to be able to insert Keys and data under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\. Even though as an Admin my permissions with HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT are Full control, it seems that the shell key above is Read only. It should have inherited permissions from parent object.
To solve this you need to update permissions for this key:
1. Open regedit 2. Navigate to key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\ 3. Right click on it and select Permissions 4. Click Advanced 5. At the top of the window, near Owner, click on Change 6. Type your user name in the Enter the object name to select box and then click Check Names 7. Your official user name is inserted into the Enter the object name to select box. Click OK to accept the change. Your name should display next to Owner. 8. If the current key has subkeys you want to take ownership of also, check the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects box. 9. Then, click Apply. Don’t close the dialog box yet. After you change the owner of a registry key, you must change the key’s permissions before you can modify it. 10. Click on Disable inheritance and select Convert inherited permissions into explicit permissions. 11. Click on Add 12. Click Select a principal 13. Type your user name in the Enter the object name to select box and then click Check Names 14. Click OK 15. Place a check on Full Control 16. Click OK 17. To apply the same permissions to the selected registry key and down the keys hierarchy to all the the child subkeys, check the Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object box. 18. Click OK 19. A Windows Security warning box will appear saying: "This will replace explicitly defined permissions on all descendants of this object with inheritable permissions from... Do you wish to continue?" 20. Click YES 21. Click OK
Remove Permissions from a Registry Key
Once you make your change to the registry key, it’s a good idea to remove your permissions for the key.
Right-click on the key again, select Permissions, and select your user name in the Group or user names list on the Permissions dialog box.
Then, click Remove. Your user name is removed from the Group or user names list.
If you think you might have to adjust your permissions for this registry key again, you can uncheck the Full Control box under Allow in the Permissions box instead of removing your user name completely. Then, you can just return to the Permissions dialog box for the registry key and check the Full Control box under Allow again for your user name.
Click OK.
