Backup to local device or SD card

By default, WhatsApp backs up all your messages and photos to Google Drive and also to Internal Storage of your Android Phone.

Also, if your Android Phone has a MicroSD Card, WhatsApp by default might use the SD Card to Backup, instead of using the internal device storage of your phone.

If you prefer, you can disable WhatsApp Backups to Google Drive and Backup WhatsApp only to the MicroSD Card on your Android Phone.

Follow the steps below to first prevent WhatsApp Backup to Google Drive and then initiate a manual backup of WhatsApp to SD Card on your Android device.

1. Open WhatsApp on your Android Phone or Tablet.

2. Once you are in WhatsApp, tap on the 3-dots menu icon located at the top-right corner of the screen and tap on Settings in the drop-down menu.

3. On WhatsApp Settings screen, tap on the Chats option.

4. On the Chats screen, tap on Chat Backup.

5. On Chat Backup screen, scroll down and tap on Backup to Google Drive option located under “Google Drive Settings” section.

6. On the pop-up that appears, select Never option.

7. After disabling WhatsApp Backup to Google Drive, go back to the Chat Backup screen and tap on Back Up button.

Once you tap on Back Up, your Android device will start the process of backing up all your WhatsApp Messages, Photos and Videos to the internal storage or SD Card.

How to Find WhatsApp Backup on SD Card or internal storage

1. Open your file viewing app on your Android Device (if you don't have one installed, just search "file manager" in the Play Store and install the best one for you)

2. In your files viewing app tap on internal storage or on SD card

3. Next, navigate to WhatsApp > Databases Folder.

In WhatsApp Database Folder you will find all the WhatsApp Backup Files, including the most recent Backup that you just created.

The most recent one is simply named msgstore.db.crypt12

Restore from local device or SD card

1. Open your file viewing app on your Android Device (if you don't have one installed, just search "file manager" in the Play Store and install the best one for you)

The location of your WhatsApp database file (msgstore.db.crypt12) is in either of these 2 locations:
- internal storage/WhatsApp/Databases
- SD card/WhatsApp/Databases

Your database file might also be named in this form: msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt12

2. Copy the msgstore.db.crypt12 file to your new device

3. If your database file is named containing date (YYYY-MM-DD.1), you will have to rename it to msgstore.db.crypt12

4. Uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp on the new device

5. When you start WhatsApp you will be prompted to restore
