I usually set UAC to "Never notify" upon installing Windows.
Yesterday I had to set the UAC slider to "Always notify" to check something, then I just turned it back down to "Never notify". Didn't even restart with it on "Always notify".
But then when I did restart, some of the icons on desktop were showing the blue and yellow shield and when I tried, for example, to change their icon, I would get the following message:
(in case the image is gone: You will need to provide administrator permission to change these settings)
And then I could just press "Continue" and it would work, without further notices.
But it's annoying when some icons show the shield when you are admin and UAC is disabled.
I tried clearing the Icon cache and multiple other fixes I found online, but the one fix for this was in the registry.
Went to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
The DWORD value for EnableLUA was set to 1 - which means UAC is not disabled.
Changed EnableLUA value to 0, then the following message popped up:
(in case the image is gone: You must restart your computer to turn of User Account Control)
So I restarted the PC and the shield icons were back - wtf. But then I right clicked one of them, changed the icon and when I hit "Apply", the shield was gone. And then it was gone for all the icons.
