I was copying various files - large or small - from 1 drive to another and the copy speed was fluctuating a lot, from 130 MB/s to 0, then back up to 100 after a while, then back to 0.

I've read about lots of ways to fix this, from sfc /scannow and chkdsk /f /r, to driver updates, antivirus disabling (I'd rather not), installing third party troubleshooting software, and more.

But there was one suggestion that seemed on point - indexing. Made sense since Windows might try to index files at the same time you are copying them, fact that might lead to copy speed fluctuations.

So I disabled drive indexing for the drive I was copying files to, and...
Lo and behold: speed keeps constantly above 100 MB/s, as it should especially when copying large files.

To disable indexing, in My Computer right click the drive (eg. E), select Properties, in the General tab uncheck "Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties", then click OK. Select "Apply changes to drive E:\, subfolders and files", then click OK.

Wait for "Applying attributes..." / "Processing" to finish.

After finishing all the copying I could turn drive indexing back on so I can easily search files content in case I use Search.

Also a thing I've read somewhere - it's better to copy rather than move, then just delete source.

And make sure there's no other process writing to the destination HDD at the same time.
