If one of my MP4 videos just won't fit on a DVD and a reduction of the audio track from let's say 640 kbps to 160 kbps might help, then...

....Prerequisites:

1. MKVToolnikx

2. Any program that can convert AAC audio files to lower quality AAC audio files, like for example XMedia Recode (free)

....How I do it:

1. I open the video in MKVToolnix and it's gonna have 2 tracks - video and audio.

2. I select only the audio track and at the bottom of the window it's gonna show it with the mka extension.

3. I change mka to aac, then click the "Start multiplexing" button and wait for it to finish.
Note: XMedia Recode can convert mka files directly, so in case you're using that there is no need to change extensions.

4. I go to the video folder where the aac should also be extract it, put the aac in an audio converting software and convert the aac to a lower quality file.

5. I test the newly created aac audio track to make sure it's working.

6. I drag and drop it onto MKVToolnix project and choose the first option which should be "Add as new source files to the current multiplex settings"

7. I select (put a check mark in front of) the video track and the newly added audio track (not the old one), then at the bottom of the window I change the extension from aac to mp4. I also add a _1 or something to the video file name so it doesn't try to overwrite the old one.

8. I click on "Start multiplexing".

9. I test the resulting video to make sure everything is working as it should.

10. I delete the old video file.
