You might think this is just as simple as it is for Excel, and it is - but it's different. While in Excel you can show comments as balloons over cells, in Word you cannot show comments as balloons over text or wherever you want. At least not in my Office 2019, but probably 2013 and 2016 are exactly the same.
If you want to print the comments you can print them as a separate document that is "linked" to comment denominations in your document.
Eg. your word document will contain denominations like TT1, TT2, TT3 etc. where you added a comment (without the comment itself), then the separate document will have a list of TT1, TT2, TT3 etc. and what each of your comment contains.
Here are the steps I did:
1. Made my comments on the document - they are shown on the right side of the document (let's call it the comment pane) and a Revisions pane appears on the left of the document if I click a comment. Text corresponding to a comment is selected in the document if I hover the comment or click on it, otherwise I can't say for sure where a comment is located.
2. Under the REVIEW tab, I have Simple Markup selected, Show Comments active and Reviewing Pane active.
3. I select All Markup. The comment pane on the right side disappears and the text corresponding to each comment is now selected in red, and after each text marked in red there is a notation like: [TT1] for the first comment, [TT2] for the second etc.
Note: Point 4 below is not really required as you can still see [TT1], [TT2] etc. just fine without the additional formatting, plus the text will remain selected in red in the printed document. But if you don't have a color printer, the additional formatting might help.
4. To make these mentions a bit more visible, I select [TT1] and go to the HOME tab and make it BOLD, UNDERLINED and increase its font size from 8 to 12. I select [TT1], double click the Format Painter tool on the HOME tab, then select each of the following comment notations and copy the format from [TT1] to all of them one by one: [TT2], [TT3] etc.
5. I click FILE - Print, then under Print Settings, I click Print All Pages and make sure Print Markup is selected. It should be by default, but if it's not then I shouldn't see the text marked in red in print preview. When Print Markup is selected I will see the text marked in red and its [TT1], [TT2] etc. notations.
6. To print the comments corresponding to [TT1], [TT2] etc. I go again to Print, I click Print All Pages and under Document Info I select List of Markup. The print preview won't change.
7. I click the Print button and a document containing "Main document changes and comments" appears. It contains the following information: - page number where the comment is located. - comment notation: [TT1], [TT2] etc. - author of comment - date and time of comment - the comment itself
I made all the comments in the main document, so only the first section above has detailed information. Here's a print screen (the redacted part is to hide my user name, which starts with T and T - that's where TT1, TT2 etc. come from ;)):
* * * * *
Better than nothing, eh?
