I had Windows 10, all updates to day, then formatted and installed the ISO updated to day (from Microsoft website). I installed the exact same Office version I had.
Then, upon trying to open a website (from 4 different websites), I receive the following error:
Unable to open https://www.... Cannot download the information you requested. |
The link is not to a PDF file, a file to download etc., it's to a simple page that used to work on the manually updated Windows and does not work on the Windows from Microsoft ISO, the Office version being the exact same.
Maybe it was a difference in the Windows ISO.

Upon reading on various sites that referred to the Microsoft site (see source), I found the following fix:
1. check if your Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit (right click This PC - Properties, check System type for info)
2. check if your Office is 32-bit or 64-bit (open any Office application, for example Excel, go to File - Account - About Excel, at the top check in the written in bold)
3. open the Registry Editor
4.1. if you have 32-bit Office + 64-bit Windows, navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Office\ or 4.2. if you have 32-bit Office + 32-bit Windows, or 64-bit Office + 64-bit Windows, navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\
5. regardless of your Office version (you can have any number dot zero, eg 14.0, 15.0, 16.0 etc.), if you don't have a 9.0 key create it, so the paths above become: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Office\9.0\ or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\9.0\
6. under the 9.0 key create a key named Common, then under Common create a key named Internet, so the paths above become: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Common\Internet\ or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Common\Internet\
7. under the Internet key, create a new DWORD value and name it: ForceShellExecute
8. open ForceShellExecute and set the value 1
9. close the Registry Editor, close the opened office file - the one with the non-working link
10. reopen the file and check the link again

For people who are like me and have 32-bit Office on 64-bit Windows, you can paste the following lines into Notepad, save as .reg file, then run it:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Office\9.0]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Common]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Common\Internet] "ForceShellExecute"=dword:00000001 |
