key words: occurrence count appearances
I want to count how many times the "X" string appears in each cell in a range of cells.
You can simply use something like the formula below and drag down:
| =LEN(A5)-LEN(SUBSTITUTE(A5;"X";"")) |
From the total number of characters in the cell - LEN(A5) - you subtract the total number of characters after removing the ones you want to count with SUBSTITUTE.
For a range, you can work with SPILL:
