To automatically (or almost) add numbers to pictures you can use the "Caption" feature.
Add one picture to your document. Select it, then go to the "References" ribbon and click the "Insert Caption" button (it should be in the middle of the ribbon).
You can create a new label with the "New Label" button (dooh). I'm naming my new label "Photo". Select the caption's position, above or below the image.
You can click the AutoCaption button in order to automatically caption next photos you add to the document.
Say you added 10 pictures but want to remove the 4th and when you do the captions don't automatically renumber. In order to refresh the captions, you must select the entire document (CTRL+A) and hit the F9 key.
