In Office 2007 and newer you can use the COUNTIFS formula (it doesn't work in older versions of Word.
In this example, the formula will return how many persons are between the ages of 35 and 44, including 35 and 44 years:
=COUNTIFS(J4:J1289;">=35"; J4:J1289;"<=44")
I tested the formulas in this article:
