Had great experience today with PhotoRec from the TestDisk suite (comes in the same directory as TestDisk).
Recovered 15000+ files from unusable USB drive with PhotoRec (PDF, DOC, images etc.)
TestDisk didn't even recognize a partition, but PhotoRec did instantly and was able to recover that amount of files in about 20 minutes.
