After I overwrote the MBR of an 8 TB drive onto a 2 TB drive and having spent days recovering data from the 2 TB drive, I tested the following procedure for swapping HDDs in my rack.

An incorrect swap might show unexpected unallocated space, wrong partition structure, initialization prompt from Windows - in any of these cases, DO NOT initialize if Windows asks, do not attempt to access the files in Windows Explorer, do not format, partition, convert MBR/GPT, or otherwise modify it. Just stop, leave it offline, Rescan, unplug, Rescan, restart PC etc.

Correct procedure for swapping HDDs in rack:

1. Make sure nothing is using it/writing to it:
- Task manager shows 0% activity
- Close any applications that might have files open from that drive
- Close any Windows Explorer windows from that drive

2. Open Disk Management, locate the rack drive, right click it and select Offline
- Make sure it shows Offline

3. Unplug the HDD from the rack
- It should automatically disappear from Disk Management after a few seconds

4. In Disk Management > Actions > Rescan Disks
- If the drive did not disappear at number 3, it should disappear now

5. Add the desired drive into the rack

6. Rescan Disks
- The new drive should appear, most likely Offline
- It should show the proper size/partitions - not the size of the previous drive or any info from the previous drive

7. If Offline in Disk Management, set it to Online
