After trying several fixes that used to work in the past, from chrome://flags mostly, tried even some Settings options, I almost gave up.
One last try was to ask ChatGPT.
First, it proposed an interesting Policy creation in regedit which unfortunately didn't work. I post it below in case it works for others. It went like this:
Open CMD as admin, and run: reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome" /v ChromeSuggestionsSettings /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f In Chrome open chrome://policy Click Reload policies Restart Chrome |
The fix that did work is the one below: 1. Close Chrome completely (check Task Manager too)
2. Open Start and search for Chrome, right click it and choose 'Open file location'
3. Right click the shortcut and click Properties
4. In the Target field, after the quote marks on the complete path to chrome.exe add a space and then the following:
| --disable-features=OmniboxContextualSuggestions |
It should look like this:
| "C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --disable-features=OmniboxContextualSuggestions |
5. Confirm shortcut update and start Chrome
6. If you have the shortcut pinned on taskbar like I have, unpin it, then pin it again from Start menu so that it pins the one you just modified
