Got the following error with a red X attached to it on a colleague's Excel file:
Excel ran out of resources while attempting to calculate one or more formulas. As a result, these formulas cannot be evaluated.

This error would appear any time you wanted to edit anything in any excel you had open together with that file. So if you had that particular file open, any excel file you would have open would cause the error above.

The error means that somewhere there's an infinite loop - a formula that requires too many resources to calculate, or a formula that is ambiguous.

Her Excel file was using over 600 columns with 21 rows of formulas, that's over 12000 formulas to check. Her table ranged from A2:YI23.

I looked for:
- formulas that sum themselves up
- formulas that cause an infinite loop

Found none.

However, on a row there were no formulas just text (row 1), I found the problem. None of the cells on row 1 (A1:YI23) had formulas, except one.

This was the formula located in E1 - a formula causing all the errors:
=+DD:YI

This is because it tried to run on 1.048.576 rows and over 600 columns, that's more than 629.145.000 cells, yes 629 million cells.

Formula showed no exclamation sign, no #SPILL error or any other error, only the value zero. No suggestion there was a formula there, no red flag.
I was too absorbed to notice that because I was checking the table for errors on cells that showed exclamation signs - because there were plenty of those in the table in rows 2 - 23.
Finding excuses, that's what I'm doing.
