I've been having this search issue as far as I can remember on my Windows 10 Pro.
My issue is:
- I type something in the Search field
- I close search results by pressing the x in the Search field and I click outside the field (eg. on a file)
- I change the size of the window - maximize / restore window / change size
- Search restarts automatically with my previous string
- I exit it again, change the size of the window, search restarts automatically

It doesn't happen in all open File Explorer windows, just in the one I used the Search feature in.
It doesn't happen if I move the File Explorer window around the screen.
Temporary fix:
I have to close the window and reopen the path in a new window.
What is causing the issue:
Apparently it's enabling Cloud content search with Microsoft account ON
Permanent fix:
1. Open Start - type search - open Windows Search settings - open Permissions & History
2. Under Cloud content search, turn Off the slider under Microsoft account.
3. Turn Off the slider under Work or School account.
No need to restart Windows.
