Create subtitle in Subtitle Workshop.
To edit subtitle background settings and have more design options, save file as Advanced SubStation Alpha (*.ASS) file.
Now you can edit the background of the subtitle, either from Subtitle Workshop or from notepad.
Name the subtitle file the same as the movie is named and place in the same folder. Once it is done, use FormatFactory or another video converting software to hardcode the subtitle on the video.

You must redefine the default "BorderStyle" to "3" ( = opaque box ) in the .ASS file.
You can use Aegisub if you don't know how to deal with TextPad, EditPlus or EmEditor.
